The photo above, from our Google profile, shows a bare dirt yard beside the pool turned into artificial turf. You can see more of our work on the [projects page](https://nrgremodelingenergy.com/projects/).

## Who artificial turf suits

Turf makes the most sense where a real lawn is hard to keep:

- Backyards with bare patches, or yards that turn to dirt and mud
- Pool areas, where you want green close to the water and no grass clippings in it
- Yards where watering is a cost or a hassle
- Paver walkways with turf between the stones. This pairs with our [paver and driveway work](https://nrgremodelingenergy.com/services/driveways/)

Water is a big part of the decision here. The City of Dallas [limits sprinklers and automatic irrigation systems](https://savedallaswater.com/resource-center/twice-weekly-watering-schedule/) to two days a week at most, and its 2026 water bill notice bars them between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from April 1 to October 31. Hand watering and drip irrigation are allowed on any day and at any time. The same notice says outdoor watering can make up more than 50% of your summer water use. Turf needs no watering to stay green.

## What goes into a turf installation

A turf yard is only as good as what sits under it. Whoever you hire, a sound install covers these steps:

1. **Clearing.** The old grass, roots and top layer of soil are dug out.
2. **Base.** Turf makers' guides call for digging [3 to 4 inches for a home lawn](https://www.ccgrass.com/best-sub-base-for-artificial-grass), then compacting the base in layers. On clay soil, [Realturf's guide](https://realturf.com/us/?p=1986) calls for at least 4 inches.
3. **Slope.** The same CCGrass guide calls for a gentle slope, about a 1-inch drop per 10 feet, so water runs off.
4. **Turf.** The turf is rolled out, cut to fit, joined at the seams and secured along the edges.

If sprinkler lines run under the area, plan for them before the base goes in.

## What artificial turf costs

No two yards take the same work. What moves the price of a turf job:

- The size of the area and how many cuts its shape needs
- What has to come out first: grass, roots, old rock or concrete
- How much base and slope work the ground needs
- Access for materials and equipment, such as a narrow side gate
- The turf product you choose

## Artificial turf or sod?

Sod is a living lawn: it stays cooler in full sun and needs watering, mowing and feeding. Turf needs no mowing or feeding, and no watering to stay green, but it gets hot in full sun. If you would rather keep a living lawn, see our [landscaping services](https://nrgremodelingenergy.com/services/landscaping/).

## Check your HOA and town rules first

If your home is in an HOA, read the deed restrictions before you plan the yard. Town rules differ too. In January 2018, [People Newspapers reported](https://www.peoplenewspapers.com/community/2018/01/public-meeting-on-artificial-turf-set-for-jan-29/) that Highland Park only allowed artificial turf in side or rear yards not visible from streets, sidewalks, parkways or alleys. Ask your town for its current rule before you plan a front yard.

### We’re Here to Help You

Does artificial turf get hot in summer?

Yes, in full sun it does. A [UNLV study in Las Vegas](https://unlv.edu/news/release/study-finds-artificial-turf-may-be-too-hot-summer-use), reported in 2008, recorded artificial turf surfaces as high as 169°F, and the turf's peak ran about 69°F above irrigated natural grass. Dallas summers are hot too, so think about shade for the spots kids and pets use most.

Does artificial turf need watering?

Not to stay green. You may still want to hose it down now and then to rinse off dust or clean a pet area.

Can you install turf beside a pool?

Yes. The project in the photo above is a backyard with turf beside the pool.
