What a bathroom remodel can include

Most bathroom projects combine a few of the parts below. The design consultation is where we sort out which ones your room needs and which can stay as they are.

  • Showers. Walk-in showers with frameless glass, built-in niches, benches, rain heads and linear drains, or a rebuilt tub-shower with a sliding glass door.
  • Tubs. Soaking and freestanding tubs, tiled-in tubs and walk-in tubs. A freestanding tub with a floor-mounted filler needs its water lines run under the floor, so that choice is made before the floor goes in.
  • Vanities and storage. Single, double and floating vanities, lit mirrors and recessed niches. A second sink means a second drain and water supply inside the wall.
  • Tile and flooring. Porcelain, ceramic and natural stone, from a tiled shower to tile floor to ceiling. Large porcelain tiles leave fewer grout lines to clean; natural stone looks warmer but needs sealing.
  • Lighting, power and ventilation. Vanity and ceiling lighting, outlets where you actually use them, and an exhaust fan sized for the room and vented outdoors, which keeps steam away from new paint and grout.
  • Full renovations. The room is stripped to the studs and rebuilt with new waterproofing, drywall, tile and fixtures. This is also the moment a layout can change.

Still deciding where the shower, toilet and vanity should go? Our guide to bathroom layout ideas compares the common arrangements before you commit to one.

Walk-in showers and tub-to-shower conversions

A shower remodel can be a project on its own, and turning a tub into a walk-in shower rebuilds that whole corner of the room rather than swapping a fixture. The tub comes out, the drain is moved to where the new shower floor needs it, and the walls and floor are waterproofed before any tile goes on. That waterproofing layer is what keeps water out of the framing, so it is the last place to cut corners.

Curbless shower or a low curb?

A curbless shower is the easiest to step into and suits anyone planning to stay in the house as they get older, but the floor has to be recessed or built up so water still runs to the drain. A low curb is simpler to build and holds water in with a smaller glass panel. A linear drain along one wall lets the floor slope in a single direction, which works well with large tiles.

Should you keep a tub?

If this is the only tub in the house, think about who might live there next: families with small children may look for one. One option is a shower-only primary bathroom with a tub-shower kept in the hall bath.

How much does a bathroom remodel cost in Dallas?

Costs vary depending on size, materials, and customization. Basic remodels may start around a few thousand dollars, while luxury transformations can be higher.

Within that range, these choices move the number the most:

  • Moving plumbing. Keeping the toilet, shower and sink where they are costs less than moving them. On a concrete slab, a new drain location means cutting and patching the slab; in a pier-and-beam house the drains are reached from the crawl space.
  • How much tile, and which. Tile floor to ceiling, mosaics and natural stone take more material and more labor than a tiled shower with painted walls around it.
  • Shower glass. A frameless panel or door is custom cut, measured after the tile is set, and priced separately from the shower itself.
  • Lighting, fans and heated floors. New circuits, extra lighting, a heated floor or a new vented fan add to the permit scope, and in Dallas some of it brings the job under the energy code (see the permit section below).
  • What is behind the walls. An old tub surround can hide water damage in the studs or subfloor that only shows once it is torn out, and it has to be repaired before new tile goes on.
  • Special-order items. Custom vanities, tubs and fixtures cost more and can set the pace of the whole schedule.

We offer free consultations and transparent estimates so there are no surprises. Having a few photos of finishes you like on hand makes that first conversation faster.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

A small update may take 1–2 weeks, while a complete renovation can take 4–6 weeks. The timeline depends on the scope of the project. At NRG Remodeling, we provide a clear schedule upfront so you always know what to expect.

Those weeks are the work inside your house. Design, product selection and, when the scope needs one, the permit come first. The work itself runs in this order:

  1. Demolition. Old fixtures, tile and drywall come out, and any damage behind them is found and repaired.
  2. Rough-in. Drains, water lines and wiring are moved or added while the walls are open and easy to reach.
  3. Waterproofing and tile. The shower is sealed, then floor and wall tile are set and grouted.
  4. Fixtures and glass. Vanity, toilet, faucets and lighting go in; shower glass is measured on the finished tile and installed.
  5. Final walkthrough. We go through the finished room with you before the job is closed out.

The usual reasons a schedule stretches are special-order items, a layout change that needs a permit, and damage that only appears once the old tile is off.

Do you need a permit for a bathroom remodel in Dallas?

Yes, if the remodel moves or adds plumbing, wiring, ductwork or walls. The City of Dallas general repair permit excludes exactly that work (removing a wall, structural changes, and adding, altering or relocating plumbing piping, electrical wiring or ductwork), so a bathroom that gets a relocated drain, a second sink or new circuits is permitted as a remodel, with plans.

For a one- or two-family home, the city's remodel checklist asks for:

  • two copies of dimensioned floor plans showing the existing walls, the walls being removed and any new walls, with every room labeled;
  • the locations of existing smoke alarms and of new ones where required, plus carbon monoxide alarms in homes with gas appliances;
  • a schedule of any doors or windows being replaced;
  • compliance with the EPA lead-safe renovation rule;
  • an energy code certificate before the final inspection.

Two Dallas details catch bathroom projects in particular. Adding new lighting, or replacing more than 10% of the light fixtures in a space, is on the city's energy code list for remodels, and wall cavities that are opened up get filled with insulation. And if the house is in a Conservation District, exterior work such as a window change needs the district's work review form with the permit application; in a Historic Overlay District it needs a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Landmark Commission first.

Dallas issues these permits only to a registered contractor with the proper licenses or other credentials. Arlington, Grapevine and other cities run their own permit offices, so the rules follow the address of the house. Sources: the City of Dallas residential permits page and its remodel checklist.

House built before 1978? The EPA's lead-safe rule requires anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in a pre-1978 home to be a certified firm using trained workers. About half of the housing units in the city of Dallas were built before 1980 (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2019-2023).

What to ask bathroom remodeling contractors in Dallas

Whoever you hire, these five answers tell you most of what you need to know. Our own answers follow each one.

  • Is the firm lead-safe certified? It matters for any house built before 1978. NRG Remodeling is an EPA Lead-Safe certified firm (NAT-F344441-1).
  • What exactly is in the written scope? Fixtures, which walls get tile, who supplies what, and what happens if damage turns up behind the old tile. That is what our free, transparent estimate spells out.
  • What is the schedule? Ask for it in writing before demolition starts. We give you ours upfront.
  • Can I see finished bathrooms? Photos of real jobs and reviews from homeowners who had the same work done. Ours are in the project cards near the top of this page and the Google reviews below.

Planning more than the bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling questions

Do I need to move out during the remodel?
In most cases, you won’t need to leave your home. Our team works efficiently to minimize disruption, and we can even set up temporary solutions if your bathroom will be out of use for a short period.
Can you help me design my bathroom, or should I hire a designer first?
You don’t need to hire an outside designer. Our experts at NRG Remodeling will guide you through the design process, helping you choose layouts, finishes, and fixtures that match your vision and budget.
What is the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel?
Moving fixtures is often one of the larger cost drivers. Moving a toilet, shower or sink drain means opening floors and walls, and on a slab foundation cutting concrete, before a single finish goes in. Keeping fixtures where they are leaves more of the budget for tile, glass and the vanity.
What upgrades add the most value to a bathroom remodel?
Upgrades such as walk-in showers, double vanities, modern fixtures, and high-quality tile flooring are highly sought after and often increase a home’s resale value.
Do you remodel bathrooms in Arlington and Grapevine?
Yes. NRG Remodeling works across the Dallas & Fort Worth area, including Arlington and Grapevine. Permit rules there come from each city's own building department.
